Cleaning all fiber connectors before patching is inexpensive insurance against difficult to troubleshoot signal loss due to dust. This is a nice pen and much cheaper than some alternatives. The only issue I've had is that the cap does not have a small lanyard, like our AFL cleaners do, so you need to be careful not to lose it while switching between plug and socket connectors.
